Making old things new

Kyle and I have had the same set of lamps in our room since we got married. After 7+ years and one burnt shade due to a candle's proximity in our first year of marriage, I decided that something must be done. I am the least craft-inclined person EV-UH! But, nonetheless, I googled "lamp re-do" and found this cool blog:

I was inspired, so after 2 hours at Joann and a can of silver spray paint from Lowe's, I managed to create a little something for my dear daughter's room. It was so much fun! Don't look too closely b/c it is far from perfect, but I loved every moment of making it. Yay for productivity and making old things new!!

Here is a pic of the before and after. I am a terrible photographer, to boot, so you can't see that there is a faint pattern on the light yellow fabric that actually looks like a solid neon yellow b/c my flash went berzerk. ;) And please ignore my stash of picture frames under the dresser in the background who have yet to find a home on the walls.

My sincerest apologies to Memaw and Papaw. I have tried and tried and tried, and for some reason, blogger won't accept the video of Corbin opening his birthday gifts. I'm determined to figure it out, though!

A trip home

We just got back from a trip to good ole Athens, Alabama. Even though I am content in Tampa, there is still no place like home!

I believe this picture pretty much sums up the trip. We all had a great time...especially the kids. ;)

We celebrated Corb's birthday...Our poor children are so conflicted and confused about which team to cheer for. (I'll let current rankings speak for themselves...ahem)

I can't believe our baby boy is two already. He is such a lovable boy with a...hmm...zest for life.

Family Time

We have been blessed to take two vacations lately: one was the marriage retreat (actually just a weekend) and the other was to Indian Rocks Beach with our dear friends, the Clarks. They were much overdue since Kyle has been working 12-14 hour days since February. Both trips proved to bring us closer together as a family. God's timing is hard to beat!

(I must add that we brought a $6 inflatable pool that we filled with water and toys for Corb and Ash. If you have little ones, it is the PERFECT way to keep them from constantly running toward the shoreline. Thanks for the idea, Loren!)

Perhaps most importantly of all, Loren and Craig are expecting! That will be a grand total of for them. Yay! She is doing well and is due in January. I'm soooo excited!

Happy Summer!

Well, Mom requested that I take a picture of the kids so she could have an updated one in her frame. I think she forgot that I'm the farthest thing from a photographer...and that my youngest child would rather do anything but cooperate when I need him to. Bless him. :) So, for a little humor, here are the shots I managed to snap.

Moments

This is my first non-child-related post. Ever...
Everyone goes through the peaks and valleys of spirituality. Sometimes, it takes God putting certain people in your life to say specific things to you to pull you out of a valley. I have recently engaged in two conversations with four very different people. Each conversation addressed something that had been heavy on my heart. Talking with these brothers and sisters really convicted me and gave me some strength that was much needed.
I say this for two reasons. First, I learned that often when my prayer life is struggling, it's because I have a fear that the devil is feeding. Sometimes I completely forget to go to God, trying to conquer it on my own. Other times, I am too ashamed/afraid to go to God b/c I feel that He has better things to do than to deal with my petty issues. And let's face it: I'm a perfectionist who is sometimes too proud to even realize that I should be humbling myself before God for help. Thanks to C.S. Lewis and "The Screwtape Letters", I've discovered that two of my weaknesses--fear and insecurity--are often used by the devil to separate me from God. When I finally come to the realization that my "valley" was Satan's dark ploy, I immediately revert to a childish tactic. I call him a dumb, stupid, idiot. (Long story, but I wasn't allowed to say those words about anyone as a child...except the devil. So if I ever got angry, I'd yell at him until I felt better. ha!) The scary thing is, he is none of those. He is smart. Thankfully, he is not as smart as our awesome God...so I'm thankful to Him for sending me people to pull me out of the pit when necessary!! :)
Secondly, praise God for those who are living their lives to please Him and get to heaven. I encourage you (if you are reading this) to remember this every day. You never know what you may say to a friend to give him/her just the spiritual boost he/she may need. Be prayerful about this. We all have strengths and weaknesses. Examine yourself and decide if you are being that light that will draw others closer to Him. Then pray hard. And while you're at it, please pray that I will remember to pray more, too. :)

She's got it! Now if we can just keep her from walking on the bottom. Her swim teacher, Mark, kept telling her that she wasn't taking walking lessons because she kept walking due to her height!

Or that our son is not lacking in spunk and personality. It doesn't just ooze out of him...there's so much that it gushes out.

Somehow this ended up sideways. This is Ava in her big girl bed (our amazing Craig's List find that was brand new). She thinks she is hot stuff, let me tell you.

The goat farm down the street from Mama and Daddy. She has a love for animals like no others. She says she wants to be a "betenawian."

My precious little chocolate face who loves to swim but hates swimming lessons. She is quite possibly the most affectionate 3 1/2 year old I've ever known. And it brings so much joy to my heart. I'm trying to stock up b/c I know the middle school years will be here before we know it. haha

Easter morning. The only way we could get a decent shot was to let each of them hold one of their favorite things. If you know them very well, this picture will speak volumes.

Prayers, please

I have a dear friend named Brandi. She and I have been best pals since the first day of kindergarten. She, along with her husband and two kids, are missionaries in Chiquimula, Guatemala. The past few days they have gotten more rain than usual. They are in a mountainous area. Parts of the mountain have collapsed and homes are falling. Please pray for the people there. It's catastrophic events like this that make me realize that all of our belongings are temporal, and the condition of our souls is most important. It also reminds me of how physically blessed I am. Thanks!!

Corbin is not taking to baby food QUITE like Ava did. She ate anything and everything we offered. He either gags or makes a sour face coupled with shivers. It's simply hilarious. Thought you might get a kick out of it, too. :)

Lowry Park Zoo

We purchased zoo passes last year, and we've enjoyed them sooo much. A couple Saturdays ago, we decided to zip out there for the day b/c the weather was nice. Kyle and I agreed that it turned out to be one of the best days we've ever had. We went to the zoo and had a blast, then went to Outback on a gift card from one of his realtors. When we got home, we got Maddie and took a walk to the park to play. That day, I couldn't thank God enough for the blessings He has given me!

Ava kept asking "I go in there?" Needless to say, she was enamored with the African penguins.

This is how close we were to them...and I didn't zoom in at all. In fact, I had to step back to get his whole head in the shot!

Ava was not so convinced that she wanted to be so close to the goats. Personally, I was just watching out for the llama. There were signs on the fence as we walked in that warned that they spit! No thanks!!
